NEW YORK (AP) — Pfizer Inc. said Tuesday it plans to start selling its first generic version of its blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, in the United States.
The company said it's also selling the generic version of its Viagra prescription drug, sold under the brand name Sildenafil Citrate, for about $3.30 to $4.30 a tablet.
Viagra is a newer form of the same drug, but the two drugs are not similar in many ways. Pfizer said its first-half agreement with generic rival Merck & Co. over generic rights to Viagra would resolve any uncertainties about Viagra's safety and efficacy.
"Viagra is a great drug for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and are looking for ways to improve their sex life," Pfizer's chief executive officer David Hevesi said in a statement.
Viagra was Pfizer's top-selling medication in the 1990s and had a long history in the drug industry. It helped the company get its product into the market by getting the Food and Drug Administration approval to treat high blood pressure, angina and other heart conditions. It was approved for use by doctors in 2000, and in 2003, the FDA approved Viagra for use in people with low blood pressure.
Since its approval, Viagra has become the world's most prescribed erectile dysfunction drug, with more than 4 million prescriptions written for it in the United States alone.
Viagra is the company's sixth-biggest selling prescription drug in the U. S., behind erectile dysfunction drugs Lipitor and Zoloft. It also has more than $2 billion in annual sales.
Pfizer said the drug will be available in the United States by the end of the year.
Pfizer Inc. said Monday it's expanding its partnership with generic drug giant Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. to allow generic drugmakers and other health care companies to sell generic versions of the drug.
Mylan will produce and distribute the generic version, which will be available for U. S. distribution by 2010.
told The Associated Press that its sales of the Viagra prescription drug totaled $10.2 billion last year. It's one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.Pfizer has been buying time and money from other drug companies to expand its market share in the generic version of Viagra, said Michael J. Roth, Pfizer's chief executive.

Pfizer said Monday it will begin selling the generic drug in the United States by 2015.
Mylan's generic version of Viagra was first approved by the FDA in 1998 and is still available. Pfizer said Monday that its sales of Viagra totaled $10.2 billion in 2010, more than $10 billion more than in any other year in Pfizer's sales history. Pfizer's total revenue from 2010 was $6.2 billion, more than half of the $7.1 billion Pfizer's sales history.

A new study has found that a combination of sildenafil, which helps relax blood vessels, and a lower dose of the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra may cause a drop in blood pressure when taken with nitrate drugs.
The findings, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, are published in the.
The results, from a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, found that combining the two drugs caused a 14 percent drop in blood pressure at three weeks.
Both sildenafil and nitroglycerin both inhibit the action of a chemical messenger known as phosphodiesterase type 5, which is needed to increase blood flow to the penis. Sildenafil, marketed as Viagra, is the generic name of Viagra.
Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which allows more blood to flow to the penis, and increasing blood flow.
Both sildenafil and nitroglycerin both have blood pressure-lowering effects, but the results are different for men who take the drug for pulmonary hypertension. Nitroglycerin can cause dizziness, which can lead to chest pain and fainting.
Both sildenafil and nitroglycerin are available as generic Viagra.
"Sildenafil and nitroglycerin are often used interchangeably," said Dr. Elizabeth Kaunde, a urology resident at the Mayo Clinic in Cleveland. "But the results of the two drugs are different in some ways."
Kaunde says that the results may be due to differences in blood pressure lowering mechanisms, which also are common in other medications.
In the study, participants who took either of the two drugs experienced a 14 percent drop in blood pressure at weeks three and four.
Sildenafil, a generic version of Viagra, works by blocking the action of phosphodiesterase type 5. Lower doses of sildenafil and nitrates are available, although they are generally reserved for severe and chronic heart conditions.
The researchers also found that the combination of sildenafil and nitroglycerin caused a significant drop in blood pressure in a significant number of men.
Viagra, the brand-name drug for erectile dysfunction, is the most popular generic of Viagra, with more than 2 million prescriptions filled in the U. S. in 2009.
Kaunde says the results of the study indicate that sildenafil and nitroglycerin may be effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
"This is not an instant study. The results are already in their final stages," Kaunde said. "We need further evidence to demonstrate that these drugs can be used safely and effectively as long-term treatments for erectile dysfunction."
